From director Sam Raimi, Send Help is a survival horror thriller about two colleagues who become stranded on a deserted island, the only survivors of a plane crash. On the island, they must overcome past grievances and work together to survive, but ultimately, it’s a battle of wills and wits to make it out alive.
Industrial Light & Magic’s work on the film was centered on a memorable scene when Linda (Rachel McAdams) has a violent encounter with a ferocious boar. What began as a hyperrealistic approach soon evolved into an equal blend of horror and comedy elements that required precise timing and design on the part of the visual effects artists. An increasingly exaggerated and caricatured boar model had to be integrated into live action plates with heavy amounts of interaction with the talent and other props, including when Linda attacks the boar with a spear. The ILM artists would ultimately shoot their own practical element passes of snot and blood effects to help lend a heightened sense of believability to the character.
Visual effects supervisor Jason Snell and the ILM team at the San Francisco studio worked in tandem with other vendors on Send Help, all under the leadership of production visual effects supervisor Everett Burrell.
