The “MORF” System
Working with Tom Brigham, who developed the original concept and pioneering work, Doug Smythe and the ILM Computer Graphics Department developed and first implemented in a feature motion picture the “MORF” system for digital metamorphosis of high-resolution images.
First used for Ron Howard’s 1988 feature, Willow, this revolutionary system allowed incredible on-screen transformations that would amaze audiences for years to come. The system was later adapted for commercial use and has played a role in literally hundreds of projects.
